Sales 2.0 Speaker at 2014 BXSI Annual Sales Conference

I’m beyond excited to be presenting at the upcoming 2014 BXSI Annual Sales Conference.

BancorpSouth Insurance Services has booked me

as their featured Sales 2.0 speaker.

Sales 2.0 Speaker - Bancorpsouth Sales Speaker

As my 2014 Social Selling Speaking Tour continues I am thrilled to be seeing an increasingly amount of awareness and acceptance of Sales 2.0. The top sales manager and sales executives understand that sales is evolving and changing. The high pressure, fast talking, “salesy” tactics are not as effective as they might have been in the past and if you use them today the only thing you will “close” is the door behind you as you leave  the prospect’s office with no sale, no relationship and a bad reputation!

As technology like Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and smart phones change consumer behavior and the buying decisions so should the way salespeople use these channels to their advantage. Social selling is no longer in its infancy and now there is solid proof and detailed social selling case studies that conclude what many like myself have already witnessed first hand…

Social Selling is here to stay because it gets results!

Only those salespeople that adapt will be able to survive and thrive in a technology & data driven world. The Sales Management at BancorpSouth Insurance Services has made the decision that they want their sales reps prepared and educated for Sales 2.0 and that’s exactly what I will be doing come this Friday, August 8th in Jackson, Mississippi. Looking forward to hanging out with the hundred of BancorpSouth team members that will be present for the 2014 BXSI Annual Sales Conference. I’m BRINGING IT! So I hope you guys are ready!! :-)

8 LinkedIn Cover Photo Examples from Social Sellers

If you were gifted a blank billboard on the side of a busy highway would you just leave it blank? Of course not!

You would seize the opportunity and make the most of it. Guess what? Your LinkedIn cover photo is like that empty billboard. Prospects, clients, recruiters and maybe your future boss will be passing by your LinkedIn profile today will you:

  • Stand out?
  • Showcase your skills?
  • Be memorable?
  • Drive a desired action?

Do not waste a terrific branding & marketing opportunity! It’s time you optimize your LinkedIn real estate to attract more opportunities.

Here are 8 LinkedIn Cover Photo Examples from

Social Selling Experts:

1) Have a Call to Action

Your LinkedIn page is essentially a landing page. You want to not just be seen but you also want to drive some type of engagement. What better way to increase your profile’s engagement then by asking for it directly and inviting your profile viewer to take action, i.e send you an invite (just make sure to share your email address). The header below increased invitations two fold, more connections = more possible opportunities. Don’t be afraid to test different CTAs to see what converts best for you.

LinkedIn Cover Photo Example

2) Share your current project

Over the past couple of months I’ve witnessed author Melonie Dodaro hard at work promoting her latest book: “The LinkedIn Code”. So it’s no surprise that she uses her header space to promote her current project as well as highlight what service she offers. What current project are you working on? Use your cover photo to prominently display your work, this will drive word of mouth and when people see your profile and then speak with you…watch how they mention your current project in the conversation.

3) Company Branding

Koka Sexton aka Mr. Social Selling is the Social Marketing Manager at LinkedIn. It’s no surprise that Koka uses his space to display his company logo. If you’re a Marketing Manager consider sharing a pre-made company branded header with your employees. Watch the proud and happy employees quickly post it and share their company pride with all their contacts. Drives awareness, word of mouth, recruiting etc…

4) Drive Traffic to One Link

LinkedIn expert, Viveka uses her LinkedIn cover photo to drive traffic to one link. This method is better than providing several links because it is simpler for the profile viewer to follow through. You can even track the link, for example if you use i.e: LinkedInIntoBusiness.com/linkedin-cover-photo you will be able to figure out exactly how many web site visitors were referred from your LinkedIn profile page. Tie the link to a landing page for best results!

5) Share Action Pics

Mike O’Neil is a Social Selling Speaker and Trainer so he shares pictures of him on stage in action, Brian Solis also does the same thing along with other professional public speakers. Mike also includes a call to action and ask profile viewers to watch his speaking video in the summary section of his profile, thereby combining picture media with video media for the ultimate double whammy. Action pics are nice because it shows people at work. If you’re a Chef…use a pic of you in the kitchen cooking up a dish, if you’re a Scientist…a pic of you in the lab with your white coat would look killer.

6) Best Contact Info

Jamie Shanks keeps it simple and direct. He wants prospects and contacts to pick up the phone and call instead of hiding behind a computer screen or back and forth messages. This is a great approach for anyone in sales, since you want the “hot leads” to be able to reach you right away if they have questions or are ready to buy. However, beware of spammers, pesky MLM recruiters and the aggressive recruiter. Giving a phone number is great but if you’re really busy and can’t pick up the phone regularly (or don’t have a secretary that can at least screen the calls) it might be not be the most efficient contact method so provide an email just in case.

7) Be Creative

In the cover photo below I combine an arrow, a call to action (provide my email address), a question and a creative portrait of me holding up an iPad with my LinkedIn profile showing. Don’t be afraid to test creative outside of the box ideas to see what kind of feedback and engagement you get from it….all within reason of course. Stand out in a good way!

8) Third Party Endorsements

Logos from third parties add an aura of credibility to your profile. Lori Ruff uses the Forbes and LinkedIn logo in her cover photo to communicate her influence and authority. You can use media logos (if you’ve been published or featured), award logos, association logos or any others that might be relevant to your profile.

10 Qualities of Top Producers

Speaker Jeff Zelaya Delivering Qualities of Top ProducersFirst Presented on 11/29/13 at Florida International University

Ever wondered why some people are successful at producing a great amount of value for themselves and others? I was very intrigued as to why this was this case. After many years of experience and education I believe the following to be the undeniable:

Qualities of Top Producers

Remember TOP PRODUCER is not all about the $$$. It’s about the value you generate.

10) Top Producers are Goal Setters

Do you know your goal by heart? Do you have it written down? If your goal is not written down and somewhere where you can see it every day then it’s not really a goal just a wish. Click here if you want to learn more about how to optimize your goal setting. Top Producers know what they are aiming for and have that image of themselves accomplishing their goal so sharp and crisp that it’s a blu-ray compared to the average person’s VHS.  Embrace the challenge and set goals that push you beyond your comfort zone. Average people set bare minimum goals while Top Producers set STRETCH goals (it’s the reach of the stretch that makes them grow).

Blu Ray Goals

9) Top Producers are Persistent

Dr. Martin Luther King was a top producer, his work and life generated value that is still being appreciated today. His great accomplishments did not come easily and MLK heard a lot of NO’s and NO’s with expletives.  MLK knew his value proposition and was confident that this is the solution to creating a better future for us all. His persistence and dedication persuaded an entire country. You cannot beat a man that refuses to give up! He wasn’t pushy or self serving instead he was persistent and was looking out for everyone’s best interests and benefit.

8) Top Producers are Driven

This boils down to “How bad do you want it?” (if you haven’t seen ET the Hip Hop Preacher STOP right now and just watch this. Understanding ET’s message will be more valuable than anything else I’ve got to say here) are you willing to give up sleep, to put in the hard & long work, to do whatever it takes to reach your goal. Fully committing to success and to your goals is what drive is all about. The quote below is one of my favorite quotes from ET The Hip Hop Preacher which I keep framed on my wall at the office.

[Tweet “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful – Eric Thomas”]

7) Top Producers Save & Invest

Prospects and potential partners smell desperation a mile away. Never get caught in the position where you just “MUST” close the deal. A top producer is never afraid to walk away from the negotiation table. A top producers values their time and wants to invest in the opportunities that can yield the highest return for the lowest investment, let me be clear:

[Tweet “”It’s always about the ROI” – Jeff Zelaya”]

Top producers make it a priority to invest in themselves through books, seminars, networking and trainings.

[Tweet “Go the extra mile to become more valuable through education and relationships. – Jeff Zelaya #Motivation #Quote”]

[Tweet ““The First 40 hours of work per week are for survival. Everything after that is for success.” — Thomas Edison #Motivation #Quote”]

Top producers seek to help and invest in others because they know that in doing so they will receive a greater return than just increased profits. Remember it’s always about the ROI!

6) Top Producers are Knowledgable

[Tweet “”You don’t know what you don’t know until you learn what you didn’t know.” – Jeff Zelaya”]

Top producers seek to become knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Their product/service
  • Their industry
  • Their competition
  • Their prospect
  • Their partners

A sales rep will transform into an expert consultant when they are knowledgeable in these 5 areas and use the acquired knowledge to share an unbiased recommended solution that is perfectly tailored for the benefit of all parties.

5) Top Producers have a Positive Attitude

You can’t win them all and you will face challenges. very tough and difficult challenges that at times might seem insurmountable and impossible. The only thing that can get you through these valleys is when you make the decision to always look and FOCUS at the positive side of every situation you encounter. Live life exuding positivity and positive things will happen. Don’t ask me to explain how it works, you just have to try it yourself. Commit to 21 days of  generating and exuding unwavering positive energy and watch what happens to your life.

4) Top Producers have Confidence

Would you buy a Mercedes Benz if the car sales person helping you drove a Lexus? If you are not confident enough in your product/service to buy it yourself then you should NOT BE selling it. Total confidence and belief in your offering is the single most important persuasive argument you could ever make. If you confidence wavers so will the affirmative decision of the client.

3) Top Producers are Organized

If you can’t stay on top of and control your commitments and  meetings, you’ll never be a top producer.

[Tweet “”Rules to Success: #1 Show up, #2 Make sure it’s at the right place” – Jeff Zelaya”]

Time being the most precious resource for top producers has to be organized and managed appropriately to maximize your ROI (Remember: it’s all about the ROI). Top producers are efficient and accomplish more with less! What you gain by being organized is time, money and headaches. Just do it or get someone that you trust to help you stay organized.  Organize your accounts, relationships, commitments, finances and watch your ROI grow.

2) Top Producers have Excellent Communication Skills

Do you know what the most important communication skill is (hint: it’s not speaking or writing), the Top Producer knows that having top notch LISTENING skills is what helps them be able to add more value to the conversation.

[Tweet “”Asking great questions, listening to those answers and giving insightful feedback is what helps relationships succeed.” “]

Top Producers also know that there are several forms of communications that they have to master if they want to reach their goal.

Tortoise and the Hare

1)Top Producers Work Hard AND they work SMART.

I learned work ethic from my step dad. He worked very hard (and long) to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies. Working hard is not enough, you need to work smart too.

[Tweet “”Hard work beats talent but hard work AND talent beat everybody else. ” – Jeff Zelaya”]

One of my favorite Aesop stories is the one about the tortoise and the hare. We all know that the tortoise won the race….but what if you were a hare that had the tortoise mentality, heart and work ethic. Who would win the race then? Find out what you are a “hare” at doing and then apply the “tortoise”

BONUS) Top Producers know their WHY and that’s how they stay motivated. This post explains it all.

10 Qualities of a Top Producer presented by Jeff Zelaya from Jeffrey Zelaya

Thank you Florida International University

Jeff Zelaya Public Speaker FIU Marketing

Presenting Keynote for the FIU Sales Club

This past week I got the opportunity to do what I do best and am so very passionate about: teaching college students about business. FIU recently hosted me as a guest lecturer and I  spoke at 5 events in 3 days (my throat was quite hoarse after that)!! The topics that I taught are the ones that I love oh so much: Social Media, Marketing & Sales.

Saturday, October 26th was the “Unauthorized Marketing” lecture series at the Ocean Bank Auditorium in the FIU College of Business.

In this three hour lecture I covered the following topics:

  • Must have marketing skills for the new business graduate
  • Social Media’s future (very engaging discussion, seems to be a lot of mixed opinions and concerns, especially about privacy)
  • The importance of online reviews & marketing automation plus why we need to consider influencers (I was really interested in the discussion that sparked about the juxtaposition of Yelp! & Google)
  • and a whole lot more

What topics did you enjoy hearing about or discussing the most?

Share them with me in the comments area below. I welcome and thank you for your feedback.

Here’s a quick rundown of  the rest of my FIU Speaking Tour:

On Monday, October 28th I visited Professor Rauseo’s B2B Selling Class to give a special sales lecture, that included discussion about choosing a career in sales, sales negotiations, lead nurturing and relationship building using tools like social media and inbound marketing.

On Tuesday, October 28th I visited Professor Rauseo’s Personal Selling Class and conducted a hands on training exercise that was focused on sales call preparation and best practices along with prospecting and lead qualifying techniques.

That afternoon I also visited Professor Maria M. Garcia’s Social Media Marketing class. I shared my Broward Outreach Volunteer non-profit marketing case study with the class and discussed the topics of Content Marketing and Event Marketing. (On a personal note I am elated to hear that FIU finally has a Social Media Class!!)

Lastly I did the Keynote Presentation for the FIU Sales Club and moderating their panel which consisted of Sales Executives from Ashley Furniture, ADP and Pepsi. I was very happy to hear that this was one the #1 most attended events of the year and the best reviewed!!

FIU Sales Students

So you might asking yourself Jeff why did you do all these speaking events?

Here’s my answer:

“It is my duty to pay it forward”

Those to whom much is given, much is expected, therefore I make it my mission to help college students succeed at business and life. I know how much education changed my future and I want the same for the  next generation of students. If I can help touch a couple of lives and inspire students to become the best at marketing, sales and business then my work and sacrifice is all worth it!

As you know I am results driven and glad to report the following:

  1. The “Unauthorized Marketing” event generated $668 towards a scholarship fund to help two students represent FIU at the American Marketing International Collegiate Sales Competition that takes place April 10, 2014 in New Orleans
  2. Over 15 applications were submitted for the FIU Sales and CRM Certificate Program
  3. Recruited new FIU Sales Club Members
  4. Tons of positive comments and reviews
  5. A future visit is currently being discussed
  6. #FIUSOCIAL local trending topic

(Winning 1st place at the AMA International Collegiate Sales Competition helped to build my confidence and launch my career.  My goal is to help our college students financially so that we can help support them in getting to New Orleans.

If you couldn’t make the event but would still like to donate (any amount is appreciated) to the cause click here.

Special thanks to Nancy Rauseo, Jose Nunez and Daniel Torrens for inviting me to speak to the FIU Sales Club. They are one of the fastest growing organizations at the FIU College of Business and have helped in growing the Sales & CRM Certificate at FIU by 300%. The FIU Sales Club will be competing in multiple upcoming events and has already made a name for itself with alum snagging job offers from companies like Eli Lilly, Pepsi, Proctor & Gamble, ADP & of course Vocus.

Special Thanks are also in order to Tim (Dugan) Birrittella, Guy Monticello, Pierina Pineda, Kimberly Taylor, Maria M. Garcia and all the AMA and FIU Sales Club members that helped to make this event a HUGE SUCESS! See you all at the top.

Social Media & SocialFresh Emcee: Sebastian “SocialBuzz” Rusk

Today’s Social Media Speaker Spotlight: Sebastian Rusk

Sebastian Rusk - Emcee at SocialFresh
In early 2012 I attended SocialFresh EAST in Tampa, FL to cover the event as media, after the conference was over I asked Jason Keath, the founder of SocialFresh if I could help with the next conference as the emcee. Jason agreed and I did my first gig as Emcee in San Diego last year at SocialFresh WEST in September of 2012. I was well received by the attendees and invited back in early 2013 for SocialFresh EAST in Tampa, FL and again to San Diego this past August 2013 for SocialFresh WEST.
Because of this awesome opportunity with the SocialFresh Conference(s) it has now really become a strong part of my brand and I am now getting booked as the emcee for all kinds of events on a consistent basis. I became the SocialFresh Emcee.
The unique part of what I do and what really makes me an integrated solution for meeting and event planners, is that I’m not only the event emcee, but I act as the host and “Creator of Buzz” by helping the event planner and brand market their event prior to it, I cover the event via SocialBuzzTV.com while at the event, and write about it after the event.
There is no event too big or too small and I go wherever an airplane goes.
Here’s my Emcee Reel:

Social Media Speaker Promotional Video for Jeff Zelaya

Below is my new short promotional video for BestPublicSpeaker.com – I’m hoping that this video can help start conversations in getting me hired as a social media speakerfor future events. The video has been uploaded to YouTube and I hope to share it on LinkedIn, Slideshare, my websites and of course on my blog. So far this year I have spoken for the

and coming up at the end of July, CANTO.

Thanks to word of mouth and the generous support of my friends and family I have been able to slowly build my public speaking track record. I hope to continue speaking at events this year and your help in getting me more speaking engagements is always very much appreciated. If you know someone that is looking for a LinkedIn Trainer, a Social Media Speaker or a Motivational Speaker let me know.

Recently, I also launched Social Media 4 Students.

This is a micro-site that is solely dedicated to the speaking engagements that I do for colleges and universities nationwide. I have had the honor to speak at several schools this past year about personal branding, LinkedIn, leadership, social media and networking.  I currently scheduled to hit up some more campuses in the Fall. As you may already know doing speaking engagements for college students is something that I have a great passion for because I was recently in those shoes and can relate to the feelings and perspective of students from this generation. Look out for my college speaking tour coming to a college near you soon.

Online Reputation Management Keynote at FFEDA

I had the extreme pleasure of speaking to the Florida Fire Equipment Dealers Association members. FFEDA as they’re called has an yearly conference and trade show where hundreds of people attend to get training, network and review best practices. FFEDA has been active for 49 years and is a well respected organization. The members of FFEDA include distributors, dealers and manufacturers of the fire equipment industry from Miami-Dade County to the Panhandle of Florida.

FFEDA 2012 Online Reputation Management Keynote

A Packed House at FFEDA 2012

The FFEDA Event is two days long and includes continuing education courses such as the one that I taught on Friday regarding Online Marketing for Business Development. Members of FFEDA get credit for attending the course and it counts towards their continuing education requirement for the year. On the last day of the conference I delivered a Keynote to a packed house regarding Online Reputation Management. In the presentation I shared many strategies and tactics on how to build and protect a reputation for both personal and for business.
